Connections that Count

Connections that Count

When I began as an Independent Mary Kay Consultant 21 years ago, I never knew how making that one decision would continue to be one of the best decisions I made and finding what sets my heart on fire.

When hearing information about the Mary Kay business opportunity, I was intrigued and fearful of doing something outside of a “normal” career. After attending a couple of events and hosting my own party, I realized I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I had no idea what I had to gain and am forever grateful for saying YES!

I have had the privilege of being invited into women’s homes and sitting at many kitchen tables to share Mary Kay’s incredible products along with asking questions about their skin care needs, what they do for fun, their families, etc.  In turn, they ask me questions and in that short time at their kitchen table, I have made a connection and built a relationship with them. The relationship building lasts long after the time at their kitchen table such as when I check in on her in a couple of days to see how the products are working for her, and in a couple of weeks at her follow-up appointment. Also, when she orders more products, and when sharing new products. My favorite part of my business is building a connection and making women feel special.

In addition to being a Mary Kay consultant, I have also worked for other organizations and quickly knew that I wanted to work at a place where I could make a difference and create the same connections, I make in my Mary Kay business. During my interview for my current position, as a Business Development Specialist at WMEP Manufacturing Solutions, I was asked how I make connections with people. I shared my Mary Kay experiences and being invited into women’s homes, and how I ask questions and make connections with them in a meaningful, genuine way. As a non-profit consulting company that assists small to medium size manufacturers to grow and succeed; relationship building is at the forefront of WMEP’s mission.

Making the connection involves active listening, which in turn builds trust and support. Building connections creates relationships that matter through a community of people that you surround yourself with. You never know the impact you make on someone’s day by showing them you care. Mary Kay Ash created her business on the Golden Rule of treating others as you want to be treated. As Mary Kay celebrates its 60th anniversary she always put relationships first and was on the leading edge of personal connections.

Mary Kay said, “Everyone wears a sign that says, “Make me feel important.”

Why Won’t My Printer Print? 10 DIY Printer Problem Fixes

Why Won’t My Printer Print? 10 DIY Printer Problem Fixes

When an office printer doesn’t perform its one job, it’s easy to feel frustrated. And if that faulty device is a multifunction printer (MFP) that also acts as your scanner and copier, you lose precious time and productivity suffers.

It's enough to make you want to throw your printer against the wall and exclaim, “Why won’t my printer print?”

The good news is that many printer problems can be solved with a little DIY know-how. To help, we compiled a list of 10 common printer problems and troubleshooting tips to address them.

  1. Printer is unresponsive
  2. Printer won’t print
  3. Bad print quality
  4. Printer security concerns
  5. My printer won’t scan anymore
  6. Too many paper jams
  7. Prints too slowly
  8. Using too much toner & ink
  9. I can’t print from my mobile device
  10. Wi-Fi printing takes too long
  1. Printer is Unresponsive

Before we get too deep into specific common printer problems and solutions, consider the best practices that our Managed Print technicians follow first. Make sure the basics have been checked before trying to solve common printer problems:

  •  Is the printer status on?
  •  Does it have paper?
  •  Are all necessary cables connected?
  •  Are all wireless printer connections working properly?
  •  Have you checked the printer ink or toner cartridges?

If you’ve answered yes to those questions and still can’t get your printer to print, explore the following solutions.

  1. Printer Won’t Print

Are you getting error printing messages on the control panel or simply feel like your print job is stuck in cyberspace? Check that you've selected the correct print settings, preferably before you send numerous unnecessary copies of your document to another device located down the hall. Also check the print queue in your device manager to ensure that someone else’s print job isn’t held up in front of yours.

If your printer driver has two-way communication, you may be warned about an issue before you even go to the printer (only to find nothing waiting for you on the print tray). Luckily, these warnings often tell you what the problem is and will recommend troubleshooting tactics. If all else fails, turn your printer off, wait a few minutes, then restart your printer and software application.

  1. Bad Print Quality

It may seem insignificant, but the paper itself makes a major difference in your final print quality. Generally, higher-quality paper will have fewer issues than cheap, generic printer paper. But what’s even more important? Match the printer settings to what you’re printing.

This means more than making sure the correct type of paper is selected; it also means choosing the appropriate print quality settings for your printed pages. Do you want to print on photo paper for a presentation or is it just a copy of an email you plan to file away? If you’re printing high-quality photos on glossy paper, draft-quality and plain-paper settings will not suffice. Furthermore, mixing brands and types of paper within one printer tray can cause further issues.

Another print quality issue is when blank pages are printed. This could be caused by the document setting itself having margins that are too narrow. Or, the printer settings may indicate the use of separator pages. If that’s the case, simply open the printer window on your computer, select “settings,” then “preferences,” and deselect “separator pages.”

  1. Printer Security Concerns

Most printer manufacturers come with security features already installed to protect against unauthorized access. However, if certain measures aren’t taken, a hacker could use your printer as a back door to breach your network. The biggest steps you can take to prevent this include changing the default password on your printer and ensuring the latest security updates have been installed.

If you’re unsure how to do that, ask your IT manager or Managed Print Service (MPS) provider to configure your security settings. They’ll ensure you have a digital lockbox and updated security settings. They can even set up confidential printing modes to protect against potential internal threats.

  1. My Printer Won't Scan Anymore

When an MFP no longer scans, corrupted scanner software is often the culprit. To get your printer scanning again, reinstall the printing software package. If that’s not successful, read through the user manual's troubleshooting section, or look online at the manufacturer’s website to find your specific printer model. There may be a hardware issue that needs to be repaired or replaced.

  1. Too Many Paper Jams

While the obvious paper jam culprit may be foreign objects inside the printer, there are several lesser-known culprits, including an overfilled paper tray or improperly inserted paper. Try fanning the stack of paper to reduce any static and dust, and re-insert the paper while keeping it flush with the guides. When using thicker paper, it’s often better to manually feed each sheet into the printer through a bypass tray.

If you don’t see a paper jam, it may be a “ghost jam” — a mechanical error that occurs when too much lint from paper accumulates on the gears and paper feed mechanism. The printer only “thinks” there’s a jam when there really isn’t. In this case, a good cleaning is in order. Preventative maintenance from a Managed Print Service provider can help eliminate this issue.

  1. Prints Too Slowly

Inkjet printers can be notoriously slow with ink drying times, but laser printers can have issues, too. Just as printing in “draft” quality for detailed photos can result in poor print quality, so can printing in “presentation mode” for simple black-and-white text documents.

The lesser the standard for print quality, the faster it will print. Also consider whether your print job is printing in duplex mode (using both sides of the paper). In this case, the printer has to take time to flip each sheet of paper over. If your goal is speed, the simpler the printer settings, the better.

  1. Using Too Much Toner & Ink

Before you pay for another set of ink or toner cartridges, consider the following:

  •  Can the majority of your documents be printed in “draft” quality?
  •  Do you need every page of the document, or maybe just a few?
  •  Can you print in black-and-white instead of color?
  •  Are your ink cartridges truly made for your device and are they being purchased from a reputable vendor?

Clogged print nozzles and sub-par ink quality are two common complaints associated with lower-priced, third-party ink. Inevitably, you’ll likely have to make more frequent ink orders and won’t save any money in the long run. Making sure all employees adhere to common printing standards can also save money and further your green initiatives.

  1. I Can't Print from My Mobile Device

Almost every major printer company offers an app that allows you to connect your mobile device with your printer to enable wireless printing. Your wireless printer might not even require Wi-Fi connectivity and, instead, might need a wireless access point that allows you to install the necessary software.

If you’re having trouble printing from a smartphone or other mobile device, check for any app and software updates and make sure they’re compatible with your print device.

  1. Wi-Fi Printing Takes Too Long

If your printer speed is fine when connected via USB but wireless printing is painfully slow, your printer is likely an innocent bystander. It’s how the print data is being transferred that’s the guilty party. Try moving the router and printer closer together.

If moving your printer closer to the router isn't possible, make sure your router is well-equipped for Wi-Fi printing with 802.11n support, up-to-date firmware, and that it offers both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. Switching to a wired connection, then back to wireless, can sometimes work as well.

Persistent print problems might be a sign that it’s time for a new machine. Use our print audit checklist below to help you assess your printer condition, settings, security, supply and repair costs.

Effects Of Listing Photos

Effects Of Listing Photos

Have you ever looked at someone's interior listing photos and wondered what they were thinking because “there is dirty laundry everywhere” or “there is so much clutter I can’t even see the house?” Did it affect you if you were planning to go see the house in person? On many occasions when people look at photos that do not show the most appealing aspects of the house they are reluctant to look at the house.

Have you ever seen interior listing photos and thought “wow” because the photos were stunning? When someone has sensational photos that highlight the very appealing aspects of the home the viewer is more likely to visit the property in person. This explains how beneficial listing photos can be for a home. Here are some tips for having stellar listing photos:

    1. By decluttering the rooms, you are displaying the house, not your belongings, and even though you have fabulous items, the house is what you are trying to showcase, not the items.
    2. Washing windows inside and out.
    3. Replace dim or burned out light bulbs.
    4. Remove anything from the countertops.
    5. Remove rugs because you want to showcase the beautiful floor.
    6. Remove any controversial items.
    7. Consider limiting your personal photos.
    8. Put away additional blankets.
    9. Put all the toilet seats down.
    10. Be open minded about staging recommendations.

Now that you know some helpful tips to help your listing photos, below are some benefits of having exceptional photos:

    1. Increases online traffic which in turn increases in person traffic.
    2. Increase potential to have multiple offers.
      • Therefore, a client will have a better chance of getting more than the listing prices!
    3. Increases client satisfaction.

As you can see, listing photos can have a very impactful effect on the sale of your home! We highly recommend cleaning and organizing prior to the photographer's arrival.

Here at Lori Dibbs & Associates, we strive to increase all the benefits for our clients. This is why we provide all of our clients with the service of having professional photos taken of their property. How Does Clutter Contribute to Stress and Decluttering Help You Destress?

How Does Clutter Contribute to Stress and Decluttering Help You Destress?

Containing the clutter in your home is good for your mental health! Although we all have different levels of tolerance when it comes to clutter, studies have shown that an untidy home can increase stress, whereas a tidy home can help you feel more secure and calm.

How Does Clutter Contribute to Stress?

  • A messy home can consciously or subconsciously distract you to the point of physical and mental anxiety, causing an inability to relax.
  • Clutter can cause you to feel burned out and overwhelmed because you constantly feel pressured to clean.
  • You may feel embarrassed if you have unexpected company.
  • A house in disarray makes it easier to lose things and harder to find them.
  • A disorderly living space can cause feelings of insecurity.

How Does Decluttering Help You Destress?

Purging your home is active work, which means it can release endorphins. Additionally, when you declutter, you may feel productive, successful, and relieved, all of which help you feel less stressed.

  • Tidying up can be cathartic, especially if it’s part of a routine. For example, clearing the coffee tables and counters before bed every night may relax you. Many people find the process of putting things away or sorting things to be very calming.
  • You may feel more focused and less physically agitated in a freshly cleaned home. Even if you’re not consciously aware of it, clutter sends your brain constant visual stimulation. So your brain may be working on overdrive, making it more difficult to concentrate and relax.
  • With less clutter, you have fewer things to clean and organize. You won’t be grappling with the feeling of “There’s so much to do around here.” Plus, owning fewer items minimizes decision fatigue—you don’t have to make constant decisions about where to put things.
  • The state of your home can affect your eating habits and depression symptoms, according to studies. According to Prevention, “A 2009 study in The Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who described their homes as cluttered and stressful were more depressed than those who described them as restorative spaces. This isn’t surprising, considering plenty of studies have linked a tidier home to healthier habits—like exercising and making smart snack choices—which can really pay off for your overall health and outlook.”
  • Finally, decluttering can help you feel more confident if you have company. You won’t have the anxiety of wondering "What will they think of this mess?" "Where can I put these so they won’t see?" or any of the worries that come with scrambling to clean a house for company.

Maintain Your Health

Maintain Your Health

When it comes to our homes we all know small maintenance and updates throughout the years help to maintain the integrity and structure of the home versus letting things go unfixed and eventually leading to a huge overhaul/remodel. The health of our bodies is the same. Doing small simple things on a regular basis helps to avoid major issues down the road.

Chiropractic care is a great way to help keep your body moving and allows your brain to communicate optimally with everything our amazing body can do.

Most people assume they have to be in pain to see a Chiropractor when the truth is coming in before the pain becomes unbearable can not only help to reduce major issues but can prevent them as well.

The most common misconception with Chiropractic care is that once you start you need to keep coming. Honestly, most patients choose to continue with wellness or maintenance care because they feel so good and want to keep feeling good. We all know that anything that is good for us should be done on a regular basis. For example, eating healthy, being active, getting good sleep. All of these improve our health and we do them regularly.

So when it comes to your health and the function of how your body moves do you want to do the small simple things or wait until you need a major renovation?

Creating A Cohesive Decorative Scheme

Creating A Cohesive Decorative Scheme

Decorating isn’t simply throwing artwork on the walls or stacking books on the mantle and calling it good. A well decorated space is cohesive. Everything in that space looks like they belong there. All the pieces look and feel like they belong together, almost like they’re from the same family of sorts. I believe that cohesiveness creates the feel for a space. Majority of my clients come to me because they tried to decorate their homes or spaces themselves and didn’t achieve the results they envisioned. The thought of putting together a space is overwhelming because they lack the skillset, or they simply don’t have the time to tackle such projects. Whatever the reason, my goal is always to bring their vision to life!

In a recent project, my client came to me because she lacked the time and the skillset to decorate her rental property. She wanted to create a welcoming and cozy feel for her guests. When I think of welcoming, I think of bright and airy. There’s something about bright spaces that scream, “Come on in!” When I think of “cozy” I think of spaces that illuminate warmth and comfort. With this in mind, I set out to turn her rental into an ‘English Abode’.

The home was already light and airy, so I focused on bringing the “cozy” piece by adding knit accessories and earth toned items to ground the space. Cozy can be created by color and also texture! I brought in rattan pieces along with clay items and mixed up the color of the wood tones. You can mix and match textures and colors to give a space dimension and depth. I added faux greenery to break up a very neutral palette and to give some color and life to the spaces. I made sure to incorporate these elements into all the rooms of the home to ensure cohesiveness. By keeping the décor neutral for my client, the home will always be guest ready regardless the season. Now, when you walk into the home, everything just feels like they belong there.

Feel free to reach out to me for more information.
