Bringing Light to the Darkness: Elevating Women’s Health

Bringing Light to the Darkness: Elevating Women’s Health

Statistics show that between 85-90% of women have or will give birth at least once in a lifetime. The average number of children per household is between two and three children. That is an extremely high number of pregnancy experiences and postpartum bodies for a population as a whole. There are not many other “conditions” out there that so many people experience at least once (but often many, many more times) over the course of a lifetime.

So, with pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period being such common, regular, and predictable seasons of life, why are there not more resources for women during these periods? Why is it that pelvic health is a relatively new specialty area for rehabilitation clinicians? Why is it that evidence-based and holistic birth preparation resources are hard to find and not standard of care? Why is it that so many women consider back pain, urine leakage, or uncomfortable intercourse to be “just the way it is” during or after pregnancy? And why is it that women who are experiencing the many changes that come with menopause are so under-resourced and left in the dark during a period that every single woman will navigate if she’s blessed with the ability to age?

Callie OT

Thankfully, women all over the world are waking up to the reality that they are not given the proper education, support, and tools needed to truly care for their bodies and minds during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. At The Chiropractic Advantage, we are proud to offer women the expertise and compassion of Callie Huft, our in-house occupational therapist, pelvic health specialist, and pregnancy and postpartum corrective exercise specialist.

Callie works with women of all ages and phases of life - from preconception to menopause, and everywhere in between. She offers treatment for pain management, labor and birth preparation, core and pelvic floor rehabilitation, safely navigating exercise or sport during pregnancy and postpartum, and more. She utilizes a holistic approach - caring for each woman with a lens of not just physical symptoms or factors, but how mental and emotional wellness impact quality of life as well.

Callie would love the opportunity to meet with you and discuss any of your women’s health needs and give you the education, empowerment, and encouragement you need to maximize your health, wellness, and enjoyment of life.

Plant Care During Midwest Drought

Plant Care During Midwest Drought

Mother Nature brings us numerous challenges, and this year is no exception. To ensure that your plants thrive in the face of harsh conditions, consider the following tips.

unnamed

Water Early

It is best to water your plants in the morning, preferably between 4am - 9am. This timing minimizes water loss caused by evaporation, as the temperature is cooler during these hours. Additionally, watering in the morning helps prevent the risk of diseases that can occur when foliage remains wet overnight.

Keep Pests Away

Keep a close eye out for pests. Drought-stressed plants are more susceptible to attacks by insects and disease. Watch out for animal pests, too, that may resort to foraging in your yard.

unnamed (2)
mulch

Apply Fresh Mulch

Mulching is essential, especially in droughts. Apply two to three inches of mulch to shield against sun exposure, cool the soil, reduce evaporation, and retain moisture. It also suppresses weeds, improves soil structure, and regulates temperature. Using mulch creates a favorable environment for plants and promotes healthier soil.

Reduce Fertilization

In drought conditions, it's best to avoid fertilizing plants. Fertilizers promote rapid growth, which increases water needs. Limited water availability during drought can stress plants further. Additionally, fertilizer salts can accumulate in the soil without sufficient moisture, potentially harming plant roots.

unnamed (3)
unnamed (4)

Vigilant Weeding

Weeding during droughts is vital as weeds can harm plant health and growth, particularly during dry conditions. Weeds compete for limited resources like sunlight, nutrients, and water. By consistently removing weeds, the reduced competition for resources allows plants to grow with less stress, increasing their chances of survival.

Watering New Plants

Newly planted plants need sufficient water due to limited root capacity, especially in dry periods. Watch for wilted, scorched leaves which means they need more water or yellowing leaves which means too much water. Check soil moisture deeply, and water if dry or crumbly. For newly planted trees, water every other day for 20-30 minutes, on trickle. For the following two weeks continue watering every other day.

Is inflammation plaguing you?

Is Inflammation Plaguing You?

Inflammation is the body's way to handle infection, trauma, stress, allergies, etc. This can be helpful and healing in the case of a sprained ankle or viral attack on the GI system. But...if it goes on too long, there are side effects. Consider a self-evaluation of your own body - do you struggle with recurring:
    • Generalized aches/pains
    • Headaches
    • Fever
    • Fatigue
    • Constipation, diarrhea, swelling, rashes…you get the idea!
You might choose to pursue medical care to diagnose and provide treatment options for your particular situation, or perhaps you prefer to try more natural remedies and care at home first. Here’s a few starting suggestions if you chose to start at home:
Are you choosing whole foods? If yes, excellent! Prioritize green leafy vegetables, healthy oils (avocado, coconut, organic olive oil), tomatoes, fish, etc. If you're not eating a good portion of your diet from whole foods, then try shopping only the periphery of the store for your next few trips - avoid the middle aisles where the highly processed items typically reside.
Vitamins/Supplements that are clinically proven to mitigate inflammation include: Fish oil, Vitamin C, Bromelain, Curcurmin, Garlic, Quercetin. (*legal disclaimer: discuss with your primary care provider to ensure any supplements and new medications are safe for you in combination with other medications and supplements and with your personal health history).
Medication options include steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS such as Advil/ibuprofen)
Now what?
    1. Take your personal health inventory: How do you feel? Are you accomplishing what you want to accomplish? Are you moving your body, eating good foods, prioritizing adequate rest/sleep?
    2. Consider making small yet consistent changes in your dietary intake, consider use of vitamins/supplements to help with short-term symptom management during times of illness or injury.
    3. Read more about inflammation and the role it plays in autoimmune diseases, cardiac disease management and prevention, and your gut health.
    4. Make an appointment to discuss this with a healthcare provider.

New Construction

New Construction

New Construction continues to be a big part of the real estate industry as we just came through one of the more unique time periods with less than average housing inventory. Despite supply chain delays, inflation and increased costs in building materials, families will continue to seek new homes from builders.

There are different types of financing for new construction.

Turnkey Financing – Turnkey financing is when the builder finances the home while it is being built. Upon complete, the buyer of the home finances the end loan so the builder can be paid in full.

Construction to Permanent Ownership – Where a construction loan is involved, draws are taken by the builder until completion of the build.

At Wells Fargo we have several rate lock options that help our customers lock their interest from ranges of 90 days, 180 days, 1 year and up to 2 years. Having the ability to lock your interest rate 1 year in advance protects you against changing interest rates and market volatility. You have the option to float down up to 60 days prior to closing if rates happen to be lower.

Feel free to reach out to me if more information about your specific situation is needed.

When Pain Robs You Of Your Dream Home

When Pain Robs You Of Your Dream Home

So, you have the new house, you finally have the yard and can finally build that swing set you and your kids have dreamed about since living in that apartment for far too long. So, you head to the store, buy the supplies, head back home, and with the sun shining take a deep breath as you make the first cut of the wood.  Before you know it you have half the swing set up and as you go to attach the next piece, you bend down you hear a 'POP' and an immediate sensation of pain courses through your back.
You keel over and limp into the house, grab an ice pack and painfully make your way to the couch. 'What the heck is going on,' you ask yourself, 'I wasn't even putting that much strain on the body!'
It's a classic story we hear time and time again. The 'picking up the pencil' analogy.  Your back gets thrown out 'picking up a pencil'.  Except now the 4-hour ER visit to only be prescribed muscle relaxers hasn't proven to help and the swing set lay unfinished.  As the fleeting Wisconsin summer carries on, the dreams of playing catch with your kiddo start to dissipate because this 'is your new normal'.

If only there was a place you could go that specializes in joint and muscle pain that, with minimal intervention, can help relieve the pressure 'right there' in your back.... wait, there is!

Allow us to introduce ourselves, The Chiropractic Advantage.  We are a comprehensive, family-care based Chiropractic clinic that offers a variety of therapies, adjustment techniques, therapists, and in-house x-rays to help approach your pain from all angles! We accept most insurances and can typically get people in for their first appointment same day or within the week! Best of The Valley awards and stellar reviews have spoken volumes of the people we have helped throughout the year.

Whether you are a first-time mom struggling with back pain, a father desiring to get on the ground and wrestle with the kids again, or an avid runner who has hung up the shoes for far too long, let us help you enjoy the home and active lifestyle of your dreams. We love to see you Move Well To Live Well!
