Connections that Count
When I began as an Independent Mary Kay Consultant 21 years ago, I never knew how making that one decision would continue to be one of the best decisions I made and finding what sets my heart on fire.
When hearing information about the Mary Kay business opportunity, I was intrigued and fearful of doing something outside of a “normal” career. After attending a couple of events and hosting my own party, I realized I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I had no idea what I had to gain and am forever grateful for saying YES!
I have had the privilege of being invited into women’s homes and sitting at many kitchen tables to share Mary Kay’s incredible products along with asking questions about their skin care needs, what they do for fun, their families, etc. In turn, they ask me questions and in that short time at their kitchen table, I have made a connection and built a relationship with them. The relationship building lasts long after the time at their kitchen table such as when I check in on her in a couple of days to see how the products are working for her, and in a couple of weeks at her follow-up appointment. Also, when she orders more products, and when sharing new products. My favorite part of my business is building a connection and making women feel special.
In addition to being a Mary Kay consultant, I have also worked for other organizations and quickly knew that I wanted to work at a place where I could make a difference and create the same connections, I make in my Mary Kay business. During my interview for my current position, as a Business Development Specialist at WMEP Manufacturing Solutions, I was asked how I make connections with people. I shared my Mary Kay experiences and being invited into women’s homes, and how I ask questions and make connections with them in a meaningful, genuine way. As a non-profit consulting company that assists small to medium size manufacturers to grow and succeed; relationship building is at the forefront of WMEP’s mission.
Making the connection involves active listening, which in turn builds trust and support. Building connections creates relationships that matter through a community of people that you surround yourself with. You never know the impact you make on someone’s day by showing them you care. Mary Kay Ash created her business on the Golden Rule of treating others as you want to be treated. As Mary Kay celebrates its 60th anniversary she always put relationships first and was on the leading edge of personal connections.
Mary Kay said, “Everyone wears a sign that says, “Make me feel important.”
